General Grant National Memorial (Grant’s Tomb) was dedicated April 27, 1897 on the 75th anniversary of our 18th president's birth. For many years it was a major New York City attraction. Visitation averaged 500,000 per year until the generation that experienced the Civil War had passed away.  About 90,000 citizens contributed to the construction of the monument which cost $650,000.General Grant died July 23, 1885 and was placed in a temporary tomb until being moved to the monument 10 days before the dedication ceremony.  His wife Julia was placed next to him in 1902.
